Awaken the explorers of your classroom at Glengowla Mines — Connemara’s Hidden Gem! Your class group can enjoy the following at Glengowla: Underground Mine Tour Seismology Demonstration Sheepdog Herding Demonstration Turf Cutting Demonstration UNDERGROUND MINE TOUR Let the team at Glengowla Mines lead your students on a journey of discovery of how lead and silver were mined from the roots of the Connemara Mountains in the 1800’s. Kitted out in Miners Helmets, your students will explore deep into the depths of Glengowla Mines as they discover the caverns of marble studded with lead and silver. They will follow the veins of copper pyrite which will lead them to the ‘miners gold’ – Galena. The constant dripping of the water, the ‘miners breath’ and if your class are brave enough – a moment of darkness will set the scene! As they explore the mine, they will learn of the conditions the miners worked under before the mines closed in 1865. After the tour, your students can pan for gold and gems at our gold panning station and keep any gems they find! New to Glengowla this year is our fossil exploration station. Here your students can uncover real artefacts! Fact-sheet available for all artefacts they find. SEISMOLOGY AT GLENGOWLA Glengowla is home to a seismograph and is part of Ireland’s National Seismic Network. Your students can see how the seismograph works and study the readouts of the seismograph. Create Your Own Earthquake! With a big team effort of stomping feet and jumping up and down, your class can see their efforts on the seismograph! Each class will then be given a print out to bring back to school. SHEEP DOG DEMONSTRATIONS Your students can see Bob, the sheep dog, bring the sheep down off the hill and through the guidance of the farmer herd the sheep into their pen. Your students will love petting the sheep and giving Bob a well deserved pat after his hard work. During Spring time, the students can also bottle feed some lambs. TURF CUTTING Learn how saving the peat has been passed on for generations. Students can hold the sleán and cut their first sod! Glengowla Mines & Family Farm Experience delight in catering for coach tours and group tours. With a growing group trade base, Glengowla, is fast becoming one of the premier group travel destinations in Connemara while maintaining that hands on approach which comes with an family run business. Nowhere else can groups experience a combination of experience options as ours : - an underground mine tour, - a sheep dog herding demonstration and - a traditional turf cutting demonstration.
